Topic of the Week: USAU Board Candidates

Candidate statements have just been released for the individuals who are running for spots on the USA Ultimate Board of Directors. The election will take place from Oct 1-Nov 2, and will select one candidate from each of the Northeast, Northwest, and At-Large. What qualities do you look for in a USA Ultimate Board Member? What are the key issues that will impact how you will vote?

    ##

Each Thursday usaultimate.org will feature a different topic of discussion on its message boards in order to engage USA Ultimate members and the Ultimate community around the world. The idea is to encourage discussion about some of the current events happening in the sport of Ultimate, and to collect opinions, ideas and feedback from our members and athletes across the globe. Interesting, exciting, controversial or informative, a featured topic will be chosen each week and representatives from USA Ultimate will provide their input in an effort to enhance its communications with the Ultimate world. Please send topics you’d like to see discussed to matthew@hq.usaultimate.org

Being a great chef means you can make great food... but it doesn't generally mean you can run a great restaurant. IMO USA Ultimate needs a more professional Board of Directors to run a great sport... which will allow players to have a great time.

So I hope candidates are elected who have experience running organizations and planning for the future (that is, "strategy" expertise). Mike Payne is a good example of the type of person we need on the BoD. I also hope the Board continues to look for non-players who have the experience to guide the sport to a bigger and better future.

Great chefs might want to spend all of their time talking about how to make great food, but a great restaurant also needs managers talking about how to promote, design, hire and compete.
