    Rules Quiz: repositioning

Rules quiz. Single fact situation. Two questions. Multiple Choice. Note the relevant locations at given times.
A cutter is cutting straight down the center of the field, and her defender trails 3.1 feet behind, closing hard.

Location 1 (time of the call) The cutter runs right past another receiver, and her defender loudly calls "pick" as she collides with the other receiver and falls down (and stops playing).

Location 2 (time of the throw) The cutter runs 5 more steps and then the thrower throws the disc to her.

Location 3 (when play stops) The cutter runs 5 more steps and catches the pass, and play stops.

Because of the pick call, the players send the disc back to the thrower.

Question 1: Where do the players reposition? Choose as many answers as are appropriate.
    • A) Location 2 - Time of the throw. Defender catches up to 3.1 feet away.
    • B) Location 2 - Time of the throw. Defender's Choice to catch up or bring the receiver back to her.
    • C) Location 3 - When play stops. Defender catches up to 3.1 feet away.
    • D) Location 3 - When play stops. Defender's choice to catch up or bring the receiver back to her.
    • E) Location 3 - When play stops. Defender catches up to closer than 3.1 feet, because she was closing in on the receiver at the time of the pick.
    • F) Location 1 - Time of the call. Defender catches up to 3.1 feet away.
    • G) Location 1 - Time of the call. Defender's Choice to catch up or bring the receiver back to her.
    • H) Defender's Choice of the 3 locations/times, Defender catches up to 3.1 feet away.
    • I) Defender's Choice of the 3 locations/times, also Defender's Choice to catch up or bring the receiver back to her.

Question 2: Did the players get it right, sending the disc back to the thrower?
    • I) The disc shouldn't go back to the thrower because the Defender stopped playing, so therefore the pick did not affect the play.
    • J) The disc shouldn't go back to the thrower because the "guarding" means within 3 feet of and reacting to an opponent, and the defender was 3.1 feet away.
    • K) The disc shouldn't go back to the thrower because the receiver was running in a straight line, which means that a pick cannot be called.
    • L) The disc shouldn't go back to the thrower because the receiver was not moving in a way "solely to prevent an opponent from taking an unoccupied path to the disc," so a pick call was not allowed.
    • M) The disc shouldn't go back to the thrower - it should be awarded to the defender because running a defender into a teammate caused contact that interfered with the defender's play on the pass that the thrower eventually threw. This is a receiving foul, just like in the Goat/Ironside game.
    • O) Yes, the disc should go back to the thrower because the receiver played on after the pick call.
    • P) Yes, the disc should go back to the thrower, but not because of the pick call. Every collision results in an immediate injury time-out, so play stopped well before the throw.
    • Q) Yes, the disc should go back to the thrower because the pick affected the play.
    • R) Yes, the disc should go back to the thrower because the pick was called well before the throw, which means the thrower probably intentionally ignored the call, which is a violation of XIX.F.
    • S) Yes, the disc should go back to the thrower. Under the 11th edition, it is a violation to run down the exact center of the field. This causes excess wear on the center of the fields and wears away the brick marks. The rules suggest running a horizontal stack or sideline stack to spread wear to other parts of the field.
