View Full Version : "Violation" call for positioning after a check

In a recent league game (that I didn't witness), a travel was called and the disc was returned to the thrower. The defense tapped the disc in, and then the thrower threw a score. However, after the disc was tapped in, a downfield defender not in involved in either play called "violation" because a downfield cutter didn't reposition correctly after the travel call.

By my reading of the rules, there is no such thing as a violation call for incorrectly positioning. Repositioning needs to be taken care of before the disc is checked in. Once the disc is checked in, the current positioning stands.

Is this a correct reading of the rules?

If it is, then the call would have been retracted after someone tells them the relevant rules. However, since there was a dispute about the rules, play should stop anyway. But does the score stand? What if the call is made with the disc in the air? Or before the throw? The player making the violation call wasn't involved in the play, so should the continuation rule apply?

Thanks

In a recent league game (that I didn't witness), a travel was called and the disc was returned to the thrower. The defense tapped the disc in, and then the thrower threw a score. However, after the disc was tapped in, a downfield defender not in involved in either play called "violation" because a downfield cutter didn't reposition correctly after the travel call. VIII.D.2. If a called infraction occurs while play is stopped, any subsequent play is negated and players must assume their appropriate locations under VIII.D.1.

The violation you described is one that occurs while play is stopped, thus the disc, even if checked in by the marker, is dead. Complete pass, turnover, etc... it all comes back.
By my reading of the rules, there is no such thing as a violation call for incorrectly positioning.VIII.D.1 (which the above rule references): Before restarting play, all players must assume the location on the field specified by the rule that covers that specific stoppage of play and remain there until play is restarted.

While the rule doesn't say it is a violation, it does state it as a requirement (must).
Repositioning needs to be taken care of before the disc is checked in. Once the disc is checked in, the current positioning stands. While repositioning does indeed need to be taken care of before the disc is checked in, a marker or thrower checking the disc in before all the players are properly positioned doesn't negate the requirement stated by VIII.D.1.

While the rule doesn't say it is a violation, it does state it as a requirement (must).
For clarity (and further support of this statement), whether or not a rule states that it is a violation doesn't matter at all. Except for fouls (i.e., contact-related infractions), ANY infraction of ANY rule infraction is a violation, by definition. (see II.U.)
